Had very good luck with rolair before. Had a pancake that drowned, caught fire and still performed well for years. This has the power you are looking for and money well spent as I know this will probably out live me.

Great Compressor
I have had many compressors and this is by far the best. Builds up fast and can run 4 framers at once or multple coil guns sheeting a floor or roof. only draw back is it is a 20 amp start so need to have a goood breaker.

Design flaw?--2-23-2013 update edit

You can imagine my excitement to purchase this brand--
I was soon dissappointed.
From day one this compressor had a knocking rod noise-getting worse with pressure increase-
I also noticed quite a bit of oil in my serparator

I reported trouble -and it took 1 month to get a replacement pump.In the meantime, they had my pump on the bench at the shop.

The new pump had the same knocking noise-
I was told by the service man who disassembled my original unit, there was a large space between the rods, on the crankshaft end-they had been sliding back and forth and the pistons were slapping-
after 10 hours of use-there was 1/4" of metal shavings in the oil.
This is actually made by devillbiss--you will not even talk with a Porter Cable rep.

Same as a devilbiss model with certified tank
Purchased only 3 weeks ago,works great. WEG 23amp motor and UnoAir full cast iron pump runs at 1200rpm and is a little loud but acceptable. The clear plastic oil sight glass on mine needed tightening but was easily readable. This compressor uses a single belt drive, no mag starter or finned after/inter coolers like more expensive models. There is only one air outlet at the top of the tank.
All this considered and with sale prices around $850 shipped this is a solid value for you gear-heads or the small/medium shop or garage. It appears to be well built to last a many, many years.

Update on compressor as of 9 18 08.
I have had this over 7 months. I did a lot of shop work and even restored and painted a car. Compressor is still working great with only 1 problem being the drive pulley came loose but was caught by the guard. 4/04/08 I have been using c7550 compressor for a week now. I have had no problems yet. I bought it to use with my wood sander and nailers,it has no problem keeping up,and when it was delivered it had a big scratch in the tank,but it was not deep enough to hurt anything so I kept it. If I start having problems I will let you know. 4/27/08 still no problems. 8/8/08 still no problems. Today is 01/25/09 compressor still works like new. 4/04/09 The compressor is a year old today and still no problems. 8/01/09 been using the compressor hard for the last 3 months and no problems. The day i recieved the compressor i took the plug out from under the tank and put in a ball valve and extended it out from under the tank so it is easy to drain the water, i drain it every morning. 03/20/10 the compressor is almost 2yrs old now and still not a minutes trouble yet. 11/14/10 still runs and works like it did the day i got it. It is used every day. may 28,2011 still no problems,but have just about wore...

Great Product
This compressor is everthing I thought it was going to be. It works great, not too loud not too heavy. I bought a Mi T M gas powered wheelbarrow type compressor 8 years ago don't use it everyday but use it a lot. Have only had to replace the regulator, not even a belt. This company makes very good products and is made in USA. It cost a little more but is built ten times better than that junk from China. Even the EMGLO'S are made in China. SUPPORT AMERICA BUY AMERICAN !

Great Product
Fantastic output and low noise level (compared to some other compressors) paired with the portability of a 50 pound compressor makes this a great product. Was a little apprehensive not having heard of the company before, but this thing is built rock-solid -- not like the cheap stuff at the local megalow mart.
Fatal Flaw
I bought this compressor new from Amazon this past summer.

Small Complaint: There is a 4" diameter blotch of rust on the tank that has caused the paint to bubble up. It's right on top where it's quite visible. I ordered the compressor for work and couldn't take the time to send it back. I had to use it immediately. Now I live with a tank that wasn't properly corrosion treated, and which is rusty as new from the factory (yes it came that way).

Bigger Complaint: The oil viscosity of the pump causes the motor to overload in cold weather. I am looking for a fix for this now. I just had the compressor in the repair shop (under warranty) for two weeks. They called yesterday and said it was just a thermal overload button that had to be reset.

The thermal fuse kicked in because the oil gets hard in cold weather.

The thermal fuse reset button is located inside the compressor. Disassembly is required to simply press this reset button...

Good deal
This is a very complete kit, with quality components. My only beef is that the bottle arrived with deep scratches on the face of the bottle. The box arrived in good condition with no signs of damage, this leads me to believe it happened before packaging. I have yet to contact the vender. Other than this, I am happy with it.

Works for me.
After intense research I compared this unit with the Makita Mac 2400 as well as pancake compressors by Bostitch and Hitachi.
Good points:
- portable with wheels (MAC 2400 same weight, 77 lbs, with no wheels, ouch that is heavy, I tried to pick up the MAC in the store)
- larger air tank than pancake units, and almost as portable.
- good air flow rating (better than pancake units)
- inexpensive
- oil lubed (should last longer than non-oiled units)
- regulator works well but not as good as the $300+ models
Bad Points:
- this unit will not work well with air hungry tools like an impact wrench. Not enough air flow. I had to wait for the unit to pump up.
- the unit pumps to 125 PSI and then, when using tool and draining tank, will repump again at 85 PSI. When I was using an impact wrench it needed at least 100 PSI to get enough air flow. This slowed me down but I could finish the job.

Not bad at all!
After reading so many reviews of shipping damage, I was skeptical...The compressor was shipped in the Campbell box with a shipping label placed on it and the box was somewhat smashed on the bottom, though there was no damage to the unit...After some simple assembly, and running the unit for 30 mins to break in the motor, I must say I like this compressor very much...I added a filter and quick connects for air tools due to the amount of moisture I can see exiting when using a blow gun...The tank does lose pressure somewhat quickly using an air hammer, cut-off tool, and die grinder, but it recovers fast if you stop using the tool momentarily...Which is a pain sometimes, but it does get the job done...If you seek constant air flow without pressure drop, than this compressor is not for you...My only other concern is that the unit sits on an angle and the level of oil for the compressor may not read correctly...The manual does not refer to this issue, so I added a little extra oil to be...

Grip Rite GR2540 Compressor
Purchased one new and am satisfied. It is noisier than the 1700 RPM models but not enough to bother me at the work site. Well designed, with wheels and a pull out handle that makes maneuvering it around a breeze. The roll cage protects the vulnerable parts well. Gauges are easy to read and well protected. Hot surfaces are well protected so you shouldn't burn yourself accidentally. Fill time from an empty tank is about a minute and a half. I have no prior experience with Grip Rite so this is a bit of an experiment but so far so good.

Good compressor, but keeps arriving damaged. Don't buy yet.
OK, so this seems to be an outstanding compressor, with one major, major flaw: the packaging is amazingly inadequate, and it has arrived --twice now!--damaged. Do not buy this compressor unless you want to send it back, until they redesign the package. The problem is that there is virtually no padding of any kind in the heavy box it ships in! It is free to bang around during transit, and when it is dropped (even a short distance, I imagine) things break.

The first one arrived on time, but there were several holes in the box where a part had worn through, or punched through when banged around. I mean completely through, and this is heavy cardboard 2 layers thick! So the air filter was broken, one of the cooling fins on the compressor was broken off, the latch on the tool box busted, and paint scraped off in several places. I fired it up anyway to see how quiet it really would be, as I was seriously thinking of just getting a refund. It really is quiet, and seems to be...

A great review by a great reviewer
I wanted to write this review especially because of the lack of reviews. I have been using this compressor for air assist on a Laser Engraver. This compressor holds 50psi on a short(5') run of 1/4" line. This compressor is indeed quiet, having a low sort of sound that is far more appealing than a metal on metal clickety clack sort of sound. I have it sitting on a folded towel to further reduce vibration. It comes shipped without a plug end(user supplied) and without the capacitor wired or mounted. I built a capacitor mount for mine, but it is a bit annoying to have it flopping around next to the compressor. In an effort to extort more life out of compressor, I have a fan positioned towards the compressor if it has to run for an extended period of time. Overall good build, if it does reach the claimed 3000 hours I would consider it a great value.

A really strong workhorse
I have had my Air-mate for almost 12 years. It was made by EMGLO and I have used it to finish out over 30 residential homes and eight commercial properties in the lower 48.
I looked at all kinds of compressors but I needed one that was portable, dependable, and could take the abuse of being moved around a job site and across country.
After due dilligence, I decided on this one.
I clean the air filter, check the oil now and again and it has never refused to preform.
It's a little hard to get started on really cold days, but aren't we all.
Truly, one of those tools that stand the test of time.

good little compressor
I bought a used rental unit from my job 4 1/2 years ago and it has been great. It will run an impact, die grinder, drill, cutoff tool and more. It does need time to recover so it will not efficiently run them continuous. It is great for inflating tires and other small jobs and is capable of other larger jobs. Overall the unit is over 11 years old and I have had to put a capacitor and power switch on it an no other problems. Good for the novice or the professional. Also is small enough to provide mobile air power which is a plus.
Great buy used. See my recomendation for pump parts.
I just bought a used AirMate two tank 4gal for $75.00 (it is the 1.5 HP, not the 1.1) and feel redeemed after spending $125.00 (to much money) on a used Dewalt/Emglo One 4-1/2gal tank unit that blows a little oil.
In comparing the two to each other, I see no difference in motor or compressors and the only difference is in the one or two tank configuration and one compared to two line hook ups. As stated on some reviews of the one tank version, it has problems with pressure valve adjusting (sticking or not working) as does the old unit I bought.
All in all, if I was to have a choice between the one or two tank versions new, I would buy the
two tank version hands down. I don't know what went wrong with the one tank configuration, but it could be the extra money they had to spend on dual hook ups; I just don't know, but this is the configuration that is supposed to be the hot shot go to construction compressor. NOT
Also, the cheapest place I could find for the pump...

Good product.... after fixing it.
I know this is a reconditioned unit, but when it arrived it had a leak in the hose that goes from the compressor to the tank. You would have thought this would have been seen in the factory when it was repaired. Overall good unit and worth the savings over new.
